Richard and his second wife, Elizabeth, were among the signers of the Bradbury Petition, the petition that was circulated and signed by many of the friends of Mary (Perkins) Bradbury in the hopes that the testimony of her good character would influence the outcome of her trial for witchcraft. It is believed that Richard Smith served in King Philip's War under Captain Turner in 1676.
