Benjamin and Margaret (Stevenson) Scott

Born: Place and date unknown.
Died: between 6 June 1671, the date his will was signed, and 26 September 1671, the date his will was proved.
Parents: Unknown.
Wife:
Margaret Stevenson
Born: Place and date unknown.
Executed: in Salem, MA 22 September 1692.
Parents: Unknown.
Married: Sometime near "28: 5 mo. 1642" (likely 28 July 1641, according to the calendar then in use), which was the date Margaret Stevenson was judged at liberty to be married to Benjamin Scott. Records of the Court of Assistants, p. 125.

Benjamin and Margaret were living in Rowley, MA, in 1651 and may have been of Braintree and then of Cambridge before that. It was not until 11 May 1664 that "it was granted and voated that Benjamin Scot should have what land could conveniently be spared betweene Edward Hasens and the end of Mrs. Rogers land leaveing sufficient way to the clay pits."

It is with sadness that we note that Benjamin's widow, Margaret, was executed in Salem, 22 September, 1692, as guilty of "certain detestable arts called Witchcraft and Sorceries." She was accused as follows:

"The deposition of frances wycom who testifyeth and saith that quickly after the first court at (Salem) about wicthcraft margerit Scott whom I very well knew: or hir Apperance came to me and did most greviously torment me by choaking and almost presing me to death: and so she did continue affleting me by times tell the 5'th August 1692 being the day of hir examination allso during the time of hir examination margerit scott did most greviously afflect me: and also severall times sence: and I belive in my heart that margerit Scott is a wicth and that she has often affleted me by acts of wicthcraft."
frances Wycom owned: to the grand Inquest: that the above written evidence: is the truth upon oath: Sept'r 15: 1692: Jurat in Curia.

#[also] phillip Nellson and Sarah his wife doe testifie and say that for Two or Three years be fore #[the said] Robert Shilleto dyed we have often hard him complaining of margerit Scott for hurting of him and often said that she was a wicth and so he continewed complaining of Margarit Scott saying he should never be well so long as margaret Scott lived & so he Complayned of Margret Scott: att times until he dyed
Phillip Nelson and Sarah his wife affirmed: upon their oath to the grand Inquest that the above written evidence: is the truth

Benjamin and his wife Margaret (Stevenson) Scott had seven children:

  • Benjamin, b. in Cambridge, MA, 5 July 1646; m. Susannah Scales, daughter of John Scales.
  • John, b. in Cambridge, MA, 2 July 1648; mentioned in his father's will as having been away to get a good trade.
  • Elizabeth, b. in Cambridge, MA, 27 May 1650; d. in one week.
  • Mary, b. in Rowley, "16: 1 mo. 1651"; m. in Rowley, MA, 18 June 1680, John Decker.
  • Samuel, b. in Rowley, MA, 7 March 1655; bur. 10 March 1655.
  • Sarah, b. in Rowley, "11 mo. 1656"; bur. 21 Aug. 1660.
