Our information about the Robie family in England before the birth of Henry Robie is taken from Genealogical and Family History of New Hampshire by Stearns, p. 324. "The derivation of this name is a matter of conjecture, but Hon. Henry John Roby, M.P., from Manchester, England, gives reasons for thinking that the name is taken from the hamlet of Roby, in the parish of Huyton, five or six miles east of Liverpool. Since 1403, the residence of the Robies can be distinctly traced to Castle Donington, a small town in the northern edge of Leicestershire, England, which lies between the counties of Derby and Nottingham. The name is variously spelled Robie, Roby, Robey, Robay, Robye, and Rooby, but was spelled Robie by Thomas, the father of Henry, the immigrant. Disconnected statements in the records of Castle Donington between 1402 and 1512 show the existence of the family at that place between those dates." |

Henry came to Exeter, NH from Dorchester, MA in 1639, was a signer of the "Combination," joined in building a sawmill in 1649, and was selectman in 1650. Soon after 1650, this family moved to Hampton, NH, where Henry was a selectman several times starting in 1656, was a constable in 1661, a Justice of the Peace for many years, and a Justice of the Court of Sessions. He and his wife were recorded as members of the town church on 18 September 1671. In 1677, he was sent to flank the Indians, who were besieging the Hampton settlement. During his last years, he kept an ordinary (inn or public house) which his widow continued after his death. Henry and his first wife, Ruth (Moore) Robie had eight children, the first three probably born in Exeter, NH, the last five probably born in Hampton, NH:
