Quinton Pray

Quinton Pray appears to have been one of the ironworkers who came to Lynn in 1643. He may have been sponsored, with others, by John Winthrop, Jr., who helped set up the iron works or by the Iron Works Company itself. Quinton was a common Christian name in Scotland, and Anderson and Downing, early foundrymen at Lynn, MA, were from Scotland, so Quinton may have been also. The information we do have about him is that he left Lynn to work at the iron works in Braintree and that he had a wife, two sons and two daughters. One son, Richard, settled in Providence, Rhode Island, and the other son, John, and the two daughters, Hannah and Dorothy, settled in Braintree, MA.

Husband:
John Pray
Born: Place and date unknown.
Died: at Brantree, MA before 31 October 1676.
Father: Quinton Pray.
Mother: Unknown.
Wife:
Joanna Downam
Born: Place and date unknown.
Died: after 7 July 1699.
Father: presumably John Downam, or Downham, of Braintree, MA.
Mother: Unknown.
Married: at Braintree 7 May 1657.
Joanna (Downam) Pray married second, Daniel Livingstone of York, ME.

The administration of John Pray's estate was granted to Joanna on 31 October 1676. The inventory of the estate was 335 pounds. It is interesting to note that after Joanna began her second marriage, she entered into a post-nuptial agreement (1685) "to bring her two sons and daughter with her to yorke." She described these children as "her three youngest children." Daniel Livingstone was killed at York, ME by the Indians on 20 Aug. 1694. On 7 July 1699, Joanna furnished an account of a second inventory of the estate of John Pray (281 pounts) and, on 20 July 1699, the estate was divided among "the sd Joanna and the five children of the sd deced namely Ephraim Pray Samuel Pray Joseph Pray Hannah Bell and Dorothy Furbush."

John and his wife Joanna (Downam) Pray had ten children, all born at Braintree, MA:

  • John, b. 11 March 1658; d. 25 Nov. 1658.
  • John, b. 11 July 1659; d. before 10 Feb. 1672/3.
  • Ephraim, b. ca. 1661; m. 1680 Elizabeth Hayden.
  • Hannah, b. 21 March 1663; d. 12 Dec. 1664.
  • Hannah, b. 16 March 1665; m. James Bell of Taunton, MA.
  • Richard, b. 3 May 1667; d. before 20 July 1699.
  • Samuel, b. 16 May 1669; went to York with his mother; d. before 19 Oct. 1708; m. Mary Fernald, daughter of Thomas Fernald of Kittery, ME.
  • Joseph, b. ca. 1671; went to York with his mother; d. before 18 Oct. 1748; m. Mary Grant, daughter of Peter Grant of Kittery, ME.
  • John, b. Feb. 1672/3; d. before 9 July 1685.
  • Dorothy, b. ca. 1675; went to York with her mother; m. Daniel Furbush of Kittery, ME.

It is sad to note that Joanna, in the 42 years after her first marriage, had lost to death two husbands and five of her ten children.
