We are descended from Robert and Mary Pond through two of their sons, William and Robert (2). William Pond's great-great-great-great granddaughter, Hannah Hewett, married Robert (2) Pond's great-great-great grandson, Asa Payson, thus bringing the two lines together again.

William Pond
William Pond is in the list of the "Second Emigration" to Dorchester, MA, which was about the time of Reverend Richard Mather's arrival and settlement there. The earliest record of William and Mary (Dyer) Pond was the date of "28 (12) 1641" (28 February 1641/2) when they were admitted to the church in Dorchester, MA. William contracted to lay the ground-sills of the meeting house in 1655, had a grant of land in 1656, and was a rater (tax assessor) in 1662, 1667, and 1675. He was a constable in 1659 and was called Sergeant Pond in some records, so may have been an officer in the militia. William and his wife Mary (Dyer) Pond had ten children, all born in Dorchester, MA. There may have been others, not recorded, born between 1641 and 1646 and between 1646 and 1656.

Robert and Mary (Ball) Pond
Robert Pond was admitted "freeman" 18 May 1642. Robert and his wife Mary (Ball) Pond had at least two children, possibly three, all born in Dorchester, MA:
We have added the Sarah Pond above as the daughter of Robert Pond (2) and his wife Mary (Ball) Pond and as the wife of Desire Clapp. This decision was made because her age corresponds with the information in Savage, Genealogical Dictionary of New England Families, p. 388, under family of Clapp, which has, "Desire's wife died 4 Jan. 1716, aged 63 ... perhaps daughter of Robert." The Sarah Pond who was baptized "6 (12) 1641," and who was the daughter of William and Mary (Dyer) Pond was too old to have given birth to the last three children, twins born in 1697 and a daughter born in 1698, who are listed as the children of Desire Clapp. Also, the decision was made because of the information from two other sources: In the same book, named above, written by Savage, on page 453, under family of Pond, he states, "Robert ... had Mary, b. 14 July 1657; Martha, 13 April 1660; and another child possibly that Sarah who married Desire Clap." In Edward Doubleday Harris, A Genealogical Record of Daniel Pond and his descendants, (Boston: William Parsons Lunt, 1873), p. 6, he states, "... Robert Pond of Milton ... had children Mary, Martha, and probably the Sarah who married Desire Clap." It is important to note that the question of the parentage of the Sarah Pond who married Desire Clapp is not certain, but the evidence points strongly towards Robert and Mary (Ball) Pond. | |||||||||||||||||||
