John Pike

Husband:
John Pike
Born:in England, date unknown.
Died:in Salisbury, MA, 26 May 1654.
Parents:Unknown.
Wife:
Dorothy Daye

"of Landford"
Born:circa 1592.
Died:after 20 June 1631, when her father's will, which mentions her, was dated, and likely before 28 March 1632, when her mother's will, which only mentions "soon in lawe John Pike" but not daughter Dorothy, was dated.
Father:Thomas Daye of Boscombe, Wiltshire, England.
Mother:Joan Morris.
Married:in Whiteparish, Wiltshire, England, 17 January 1612/3.

John Pike came to America in the ship James in 1635 with his five children. Since there is no mention of his wife here or in his will, it is assumed that she died in England before the family emigrated. On the passenger list of the James, we find "John Pike, laborer from Langford." The appellation "laborer" is probably inaccurate as, according to a Mr. Coffin, the historian of Newbury, MA, "No laborer of those days had two such educated sons as Robert and John Pike, Jr., both men of marked prominence in the colony." Also, we find in the Essex County (MA) Court records of 1636 that "John Pike, Sr." appeared as attorney for a Mr. Eson, plaintiff, versus Robert Coles, defendant, obtaining a verdict from the jury of 4 pounds 7s. 6d. damages, and 4s. cost. He again appeared as attorney for Mr. Eson in Salem in January of 1637, certainly not the functions of a "laborer."

John Pike was first at Ipswich, MA, and then went to Newbury, MA, where in the town books is found this record: "Voted that John Pike be fined 2s. for departing from the meeting without leave and contemptuously."

In his later years, he moved to Salisbury, MA, where his son, Robert, had preceded him in 1639. In his will, where he left an estate valued around 230 pounds, he mentions his children and two of his grandsons.

John and his wife Dorothy (Daye) Pike had five children, all born in England:

  • John, Jr., bpt. 8 Nov. 1613; m. (1) Mary Turvell; m. (2) Elizabeth Blossom.
  • Robert, b. ca. 1615; m. (1) in April of 1641 Sarah Saunders, who died in Nov. 1679; m. (2) widow Martha (Noyce) Goldwyer. Major Robert Pike was the lawyer who defended Mary (Perkins) Bradbury at her witchcraft trial in 1692. Mary (Perkins) Bradbury was the mother-in-law of both his daughter, Sarah, and of his nephew, Henry True, and was an ancestor of ours. You can find out more details by reviewing the entry of her husband, Thomas Bradbury.
  • Dorothy, date of birth unknown; m. Daniel Henrick.
  • Ann, date of birth unknown; m. James Fisk.
  • Israel, bpt. 20 April 1623; m. (1) Henry True; m. (2) Joseph Fletcher.
