John ParkerWe do not know that John Parker was our immigrant ancestor, nor do we know his wife's name. We do know that he was a carpenter while living in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and was recorded on 12 June 1648 as the grantee of John Heard of his house and all of his land in Gorgeana, now York, Maine. For this property, he paid the sum of twelve pounds, payable in money, coin, or board in three annual payments (York Deeds III, 72). By 1656, he was the public whipper and was confirmed on 4 July 1659 as the prison keeper and hangman for the county. He retired at his own request, being ancient, on 2 July 1678. One hazard of his job was demonstrated by the levy Henry Dering placed on John's property, 21 May 1686, because of a judgement obtained in 1673 for letting Anthony Lamy escape from jail. John signed the Act of Submission in 1652, and in 1656, the petition to Cromwell. He received grants of land in 1674 and 1679. He took the Oath of Allegiance on 22 MArch 1679/80 and was excused from military duty in 1681. John Parker and his wife had five children, at least, places and dates of birth not known accurately:
A hint of tragedy is suggested in the fact that on 11 September 1677, John Parker, Sr., the father, took over the administration of both his son George Parker's estate and his son-in-law Wiliam Roanes's estate. No household goods or land were listed in the inventory of George Parker's estate. |
