Robert Mulliken

Husband:
Robert Mulliken
Born: in Scotland.
Died: 11 June 1741.
Parents: unknown.
Wife:
Rebecca Savory
Born: at Newbury, MA, 20 January 1663/4.
Died: at Bradford, MA 9 July 1749.
Father: Robert Savory.
Mother: Mary Sawyer Mitchell, widow of William Mitchell.
Married: in Newbury, MA, 15 December 1687.

The earliest families of the name Mulliken known to have settled in the Colonies came to Maryland with Lord Baltimore as early as 1650 where they prospered having large holdings of land grants which increased rapidly in value as the country was settled. The next families of this name came to New England and among them were the families of Hugh and Robert Mulliken, reputed to have been brothers. Family tradition makes them come from the northern shires of Scotland and, according to the records of the Brattle Street Church of Boston, to have first settled in Boston as early as 1686. Hugh is said to have been the father of John Mulliken who married Elizabeth Alger and moved his family to Scarborough, ME around 1719. For some reason, now unknown, this branch of the family has since used the spelling "Milliken" for their name. Robert, along with others of the same surname, was a member of the Scot's Charitable Society and of the St. Andrews Lodge of Free Masons to which Paul Revere belonged. Some of his children were born and christened in Boston. He moved his family to Rowley, now Bradford, MA about 1694 and his homestead was on the bank of the Merrimack River. He and his wife, Rebecca, united with the West Parish Church of Bradford in 1720. He made his will January 9, 1740 and died June 11, 1741, leaving a widow and five children to whom he made bequests. The early members of this family were buried in the old Bradford Cemetery, on Salem Road, about one mile below the bridge which connects Haverhill with Bradford, and in the East Parish (now Groveland) burying ground near "Balch's Grove."

Robert's will (Salem Probate Records) indicates that he owned several acres of land, his homestead and household goods, animals and utensils of husbandry and what was termed "public bills of credit." Also, he left his son, Robert, his "loom tackling for weaving" so he may have been a weaver in Scotland and selected Rowley to settle in so that he could earn his living at the Cloth Mills. He was paid 30 shillings in 1723 for the gravestone of Dr. Daniel Bradstreet which could indicate that designing and engraving gravestones was one of his skills.

Robert and his wife Rebecca (Savory) Mulliken had nine children:

  • Robert, b. at Boston, 9 Dec. 1686; m. 4 Oct. 1737 Mary Hartbath.
  • John, b. at Boston 26 Jan. 1690; m. (1) Mary Poore; (2) Sarah Griffin.
  • Mary, b. at Boston 26 Sept. 1692; m. 19 June 1716 Thomas Stickney.

  • Ebenezer, b. at Bradford, 26 Feb. 1705; d. 10 Dec. 1714.
  • Jonathan, no record of birth; m. 1742 Martha Marsh.

In addition, Terri Mulliken Allen, in her work, Descendants of Robert Mullicken of Bradford, Massachusetts 1666-1999 lists a son Josiah.

Amos Mulliken
Born: at Bradford, MA 30 November 1727.
Died: in Townsend, MA, 27 November 1814, aged 87.
Father: Benjamin Mulliken.

It is possible that Mehitable (Dodge) Mulliken was of the family and one of the descendants of William Dodge who came from England on the ship Lion's Whelp which sailed from Gravesend 25 April 1629 and from the Isle of Wight 11 May 1629 and landed at Salem, MA 29 June 1629. Moses Mulliken

Husband:

Wife:
Anna Willoughby
Born: at Plymouth, NH.
Died: Place and date unknown.
Father: John Willoughby.
Mother: Azubah Wheeler.
Married: 8 February 1792.

Moses, unlike his direct ancestors, left Bradford at a young age. One of the reasons may have been that, being the sixth son in the family, he had to move on to newer settlements to find land and earn his living. Another reason may have been that he was like hundreds of his contemporaries who were adventuresome and enjoyed new challenges. In any case, he arrived in Plymouth, NH in 1791 and met and married Anna Willoughby, the daughter of Deacon John Willoughby. In 1812, the family moved to Haverhill, NH and soon after to Newbury, VT where Moses was the jail warden.

Moses and his wife Anna (Willoughby) Mulliken had thirteen children, eleven born in Plymouth, NH, one in Haverhill, NH, and one in Newbury, VT:
