John Moulton

Born: probably in Great Ormsby, Norfolk County, England, about 1599.
Died: in Hampton, NH between 23 January 1649 when his will was made out and 1 October 1650 when his will was probated.
Parents: Robet and Mary (Smith) Moulton.
Wife:
Anne Green
Born: in England, about 1599.
Died: 12 April 1668, place unknown.
Parents: Unknown.
Married: Ormsby St. Margaret, England, 24 September 1623.

John and his family, along with his younger brother, Thomas, came to this country on the ship Rose out of Yarmouth arriving in Boston, MA, 1636/7. Both John and his wife were thirty-eight years old and were accompanied by their five children and two servants, the latter named Alice Eden, age 18, and Adam Goodwin (spelled Goodens on the ship's passenger list), age 20.

John was one of those who asked leave in 1638 to settle Hampton, NH, and was granted two hundred and fifty acres of land there in December 1639. He was representative to the General Court in Boston in 1639. In Hampton, he served on a small claims committee and was a selectman in 1647.

John and his wife Anne (Green) Moulton had seven children:

  • Henry, b. in England about 1623; m. Sobriety Hilton, daughter of Edward Hilton.
  • Mary, b. in England; m. William Sanborn, son of John Sanborn.
  • Anne, b. in England; was unmarried at the date of her father's will.
  • Twins:
    • Jane, b. in England about 1634; unmarried.
    • Bridget, b. in England about 1634; unmarried. These twins lived together and died the same day, 19 March 1699, if the records are correct.
  • John, bpt. in Newbury, MA, 1638/9; m. Lydia Taylor, daughter of Anthony Taylor.
  • Ruth, bpt. in Hampton, NH, 7 March 1641; m. in Hampton, NH, 3 April 1660 Peter Johnson, son of Edmund and Mary Johnson.
