Jabez added an "s" to his last name, making it Milnes. He and his wife, Hannah lived in Headingly, Yorkshire, England. Jabez ran a music store in nearby Selby at 14, The Crescent. That address places the store directly across the street from Selby Abbey, a Benedictine Abbey that dates back to AD 1069. Jabez's oldest daughter, Mary Ann, was an organist at the abbey. There she met Henry Greeves, who was curate at the abbey, and they eventually married. Rev. Greeves was made vicar at All Saints Church in nearby Wistow, where Mary Ann continued to be organist.
Another of Jabez's daughters, Annie Elizabeth, is listed in Selby town directories of the time as a music teacher, also at 14, The Crescent.
Jabez and his wife Hannah (Smalley) Milnes had at six children:
- Mary Ann, b. 27 Nov. 1842, d. 10 May 1937; m. 1 June 1865 Rev. Henry Greeves. They had six children, Frederic, Emily, Constance, Kathleen, Henry Brandreth, and Margaret Hannah.
