Richard and Grace Miller

We do not know where Richard Miller and his wife Grace were born (one source states that all the early Millers in this country came from England, Scotland, or Ireland), but we do know that Richard was born circa 1649 and died probably in Kittery, Maine, 8 October 1692. We do not know who their parents were, nor Grace's maiden name. Grace married second, Christopher Banfield.

All of the information we have on this family was found in the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire by Noyes, Libby and Davis, p. 481. It consists mostly of the court cases Richard was involved in throughout his life.

Richard was a fisherman and lived on Long Reach, Kittery, Maine. In 1679, he was fishing for a Mr. John Cutts under William Pitt, master. In 1685, he was fishing off Pickering's Island.

In July 1669, Richard was involved somehow in a court case with Katherine and Mary Green and Katherine Tobey when the trio was ordered to pay him 3s. apiece and the court costs. In September 1672, his wife Grace had him bound for good behavior and proper maintenance (she was pregnant at the time), the court warning her to be more careful of appearances and to attend to her family. In 1674, Richard was absent from meeting and fined for non-appearance in court.

The administration of Richard's estate went to his widow and son, Samuel, on 28 November 1693.

Richard and his wife Grace Miller had at least three children:

  • Samuel, born ca. 1672; m. Jan. 1693/4, Mary Neale.
  • Mary, under 18 years old in 1696; m. Ephraim Wentworth.
  • Martha, under 18 years old in 1696; m. 24 Dec. 1703, John Wentworth.
