It is believed that the Leadbetter family originated in France where the name Lebete is still found. The earliest record of a Leadbetter in England is of a Gounild DeLebete who lived in Buckinghamshire in 1248 as recorded in the Hundred Rolls of early English families. The spelling DeLebete, followed later by just Lebete, is the oldest known spelling in England. During the next century, the spelling appeared as LeLedbeter, with the Le eventually dropped. The present spelling Leadbetter and Leadbeater date to about 1590.
