Amos Goudy, Sr.
This name is spelled Goudy and Gowdy in various records. We do not know where Amos Goudy (Gowdy), Sr. was born, nor his parentage for certain, but we know he was in York, ME as early as 1722, where he owned land. Amos Goudy (Gowdy), Sr. was a soldier in York, ME, on the muster roll of Jeremiah Moulton, from 21 November to 28 January, 1725. He removed to Bristol, ME about 1760 and built a home in 1765 and was one of the earliest settlers on the eastern bank of the Damariscotta River, opposite Pleasant Cove. He was a fisherman. Also, he bought mill privileges from William Kent on the western side of "Oar's" brook where he built and operated a saw and grist mill, long known as Gowdy Mills. His death was caused by accidental drowning in the millpond and he is supposed to be buried in the pasture by his home. His widow, Mercy, was appointed administrator of his estate, 21 May 1765, and guardian of the minor child, Betty, on 18 September 1765. Amos, Sr. and his second wife Mercy (Booker) Goudy had six children, all born in York, ME:
