John and Margaret Fearing

John Fearing		Born: probably in Cambridge, England, possibly in 1612.
Died: in Hingham, MA, 14 May 1665.
Parents: Unknown.
Wife:
Margaret -----		We have no information about her background.
Married: probably in America.
As a widow, Margaret (-----) Fearing married 3 November 1675, Robert Williams of Roxbury, MA.

Early, the name Fearing was often spelt Fering. I do not know if the two John Fearings mentioned below were one and the same man. "John, according to Cushing's MS, 'came from Cambridge, in Old England' with Matthew Hawke and wife 'and settled in New Hingham 1638.' (It is on record that a John Fearing arrived in Hingham with others in 1635. See 'History of Hingham' by Solomon Lincoln, pp. 43, 44.) He had land granted him in 1635, 1647, etc., and after his decease other lots in the six divisions fell to his heirs, which were drawn in his name. He was a man of prominence in our early local history, and held various positions of trust and responsibility. Freeman 1652. Selectman 1648, 1661, and 1663; also deacon of the church for many yrs." Preface by Lincoln, "History of Hingham (MA)," p. 217. Also, John was constable in 1650 and he and his family lived on North St.

Parents: Edward and Elizabeth (Eames) Wilder.
Married: probably in Hingham, MA, 22 July 1673.

Israel was a cooper and lived on the paternal homestead on North St. in Hingham, MA.

Israel and his wife Elizabeth (Wilder) Fearing had five children, all born in Hingham, MA:

  • John, b. 29 Dec. 1674; m. Margaret Hawke.
  • Elizabeth, b. 25 Jan. 1678/9; m. 8 May 1702, James Sprague.
  • Margaret, b. 8 June 1680; m. 18 Nov. 1708, Ephraim Jones.
  • Israel, Jr., b. 29 Aug. 1682.
  • Sarah, bpt. 1 Dec. 1689; m. 13 Sept. 1716, Matthew Sprague.

John was a weaver and lived in a house on Pleasant St. in Hingham, MA, which he bought from joshua Lasell. He was constable in 1703 and a selectman in 1731 and 1732.

John and his wife Margaret (Wilder) Fearing had four children, all born in Hingham, MA:

  • Lydia, b. 3 Sept. 1709; m. Seth Cushing.
  • James, b. 22 April 1712; m. Deborah Jacob.
  • Hawke, b. 13 July 1715.
  • John, Jr., b. 1 Sept. 1720.
