Henry Ewell

Henry Ewell was a shoemaker of Sandwich, England, who came to the colonies on the ship Hercules in March 1634, and settled in Scituate. He was a soldier in the Pequot War, 1637, and a freeman in Scituate, in 1638. He removed to Barnstable in 1640, and returned to Scituate before 1647. His farm in Scituate was on the east side of Walnut Tree Hill. His house was burnt by the Indians in 1676 and another was erected on the spot. Henry Ewell's will was dated 16 August 1681.

Henry and his wife Sarah (Annable) Ewell had at least nine children:

  • John, bpt. in Barnstable, MA, 9 March 1639; d. in Newbury, 1686.
  • Ebenezer, bpt. in Barnstable, MA, 12 Feb. 1642; not in his father's will.
  • Sarah, bpt. in Barnstable, 14 Sept. 1645; m. ----- Northey.
  • Eunice, in her father's will but no other information has been found about her.
  • Hannah, b. in Scituate, MA, 21 June 1649.
  • Gershom, b. in Scituate, MA, 14 Nov. 1650; m. Mary -----.
  • Bethia, b. in Scituate, MA, 27 Sept. 1653; d. in Scituate, MA, 8 May 1669.
  • Ichabod, b. in Scituate, MA, June 1659; m. in Scituate, 1 May 1689, Mehitable Gwinne.
  • Deborah, b. in Scituate, MA, 4 June 1663.

In 1680, Gershom had a share in the Conihassett land (by purchase) in the right of John Hoar of Concord, Massachusetts. Also, at a place then called Cold Spring, he owned land which was passed to his son, John.

Gershom and his wife Mary Ewell had eight children, all born in Scituate, MA:

  • Bethia, b. 3 March 1682/3; m. 6 June 1712, Thomas Rogers of Marshfield, son of John Rogers.
  • Mary, b. 14 Aug. 1685; m. in Scituate, MA, 28 Aug. 1707, Thomas Bryant, Esq., son of John Bryant.
  • Sarah, b. 2 Feb. 1687/8; m. in Scituate, 29 Dec. 1710, Edmond Morey.
  • Rebecca, b. 2 April 1690; d. in Scituate, 4 Nov. 1774.
  • Gershom, Jr., b. 24 Jan. 1691/2; m. in Scituate, 28 Aug. 1716, Relief Turner.
  • Hannah, b. 1 Feb. 1694/5.
  • Penelope, b. 18 April 1697; m. in Scituate, 7 Jan. 1724, Isaac Hatch.
  • John, b. 27 June 1699; d. 1758. At some point in his life, John returned to England, where he may have died. He had at least two sons, John, Jr., who was born in Scotland in 1734, and Malachi.
