Daniel Emery

Husband:
Daniel Emery
Born: in Kittery, ME 13 September 1667.
Died: in Berwick, ME 15 October 1722.
Parents: James and Elizabeth Emery.
Wife:
Margaret Gowen
Born: 15 November 1678.
Died: in Berwick, ME 21 November 1751.
Parents: William and Elizabeth (Frost) Gowen.
Married: 17 March 1695.

Daniel was a noted surveyor of land and was elected surveyor of Kittery, ME 1706-1717. He was chosen deacon of the Congregational Church at the Parish of Unity, now Berwick, in 1703, elder Nov. 21, 1720 and was probably one of the original members of that church. He was selectman 1704-1712 and also 1718. In 1712, he was elected to a term of surveyor appointed by the general Court to run the lines of the town and in 1718 was one of the commissioners to mark the line between the common rights of Berwick and Kittery and to mark the division between Berwick and Kittery.

He was moderator of the town meeting in 1707 and 1718. Except for the conflict of both Daniel and Job with the authorities for aiding and abetting their father (see the entry on James Emery), I have not found any other dealings with the courts. The impression has been that the Emerys were capable business men, independent, outspoken, people of principle who were not afraid to voice their opinions.

Daniel and his wife Margaret (Gowen) Emery had ten children, all born in what is now Berwick, ME:

  • Daniel, Jr., b. 25 Jan. 1697; m. Mary (Lord) Hodsdon, widow of Thomas Hodsdon.
