We are descended from two men named Eames. One branch of our ancestry is descended from Anthony Eames (circa 1595-1686) originally of Dorsetshire, England, removed to Marshfield, Massachusetts, while another branch of our ancestry descends from Amos Eames, who lived in Marshfield, Massachusetts in the 18th Century. Unfortunately, we have not been able to connect Amos Eames with Anthony, or any other member of any Eames or Ames family in New England.
The name was Ames and Emes as well as Eames in early spelling. Of interest, Reginald Ames, M.A., in 1889, London, published Genealogical Memoranda of the Family of Ames (Library of Congress). He said the families came before 1200 to England from Spain. It was an ancient Hebrew family of the tribe of Manasseh; in translation from Hebrew to Latin it became Emes or Ames. The proof, he said, is in a scrap of Hebrew genealogy on a scroll at the Escorial in Spain.

Anthony and Marjorie (Pierce) Eames
Anthony Eames was a proprietor of Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1634 and his wife, Margery, was admitted to the Charlestown church, 13 September 1635. They moved to Hingham in 1636 where Anthony became a freeman and member of the church 9 March 1636/7. He was granted a house lot on the "Lower Plain" in 1636. He represented Hingham in the General Court several times from 1637 through 1644. He assisted in laying out the boundary between the Massachusetts and Plymouth patents, and on 12 June 1643, the town granted him permission along with Samuel Ward and Bozoun Allen to set up a corn mill for the town. He was a lieutenant in the military company and later its captain. About 1650, he moved to Marshfield wehre he and his son, Mark, bought a house and land on 10 December 1651. He was deputy to the General Court at Plymouth from 1653 to 1661, and was a member of the council of war. He was admitted freeman in the Plymouth Colony, March 1654-55. He also served the town as moderator. Anthony and his wife Margery (Pierce) Eames had eight children, all born in England:

Amos EamesWe have not been able to discover the ancestry of Amos Eames, nor connect him with the Anthony Eames family of Marshfield, MA, or to the William Ames family of Bridgewater, MA, mentioned in some research as a possibility.
