Wife: Hannah ----- maiden name may have been Evered | Born: | in England, 1598. |
| Died: | in Haverhill, MA, sometime after 1692 when she deeded land to her son, Robert, and was joined in the deed by her children, John Ayer of Ipswich and Peter and Nathaniel Ayer of Haverhill. |
| Parents: | Unknown. |
| Married: | Place and date unknown. |
The basis for the speculation that Hannah's maiden name may have been Evered was the will of a John Evered who named the six children of John Ayer (we know his wife was Hannah) calling them his niece, Rebecca, and her brothers, John, Robert, Thomas, Peter, and Nathaniel of Haverhill.
John Ayer may have been the brother of James Eayers of London and of Mary Scriven, a widow, also of London. Mary Scriven evidently kept a bakery, as she mentions in her will "the meal etc. belonging to the trade of a baker" at her dwelling house in Fleet Lane.
John Ayer and his family came from Wiltshire, England to Newbury, MA, on the ship James in 1635. He first settled in Salisbury, Massachusetts where he was granted land in the first division in 1640. He was in Salisbury as late as 21 December 1644 when his last child, Hannah, was born. He soon thereafter moved to Haverhill where both he and his son, John, Jr., appear as landholders in 1645. On 13 February 1646/7, he was fined by the town of Haverhill "for not attending the town meeting in season." He twice served on the grand jury at Essex County Court.
John and his wife Hannah (Evered?) Ayer had nine children, those born before 1635 probably born in England:
- John, Jr., b. in 1622; m. (1) Sarah Williams; m. (2) Mary Woodam.
- Robert, b. about 1625; m. Elizabeth Palmer, daughter of Henry Palmer.
- Rebecca, b. 1627; m. John Aslett.
- Thomas, b. 1630; m. Elizabeth Hutchins, daughter of John Hutchins.
- Peter, b. about 1633; m. Hannah Allen, daughter of William Allen.
- Mary, b. about 1634; did not marry.
- Obadiah, b. 1636; m. Hannah Pike, daughter of John Pike.
- Nathaniel, b. 1638; m. Tamesin Turloar.
- Hannah, b. in Salisbury, MA, 21 Dec. 1644; m. Stephen Webster, son of John Webster.
